The Great Barrier Reef has been built by the calcium deposits of these animals over a period of thousands and thousands of years. It is now the greatest and largest features of the earth which is natural. There are many artificial or man made features on this planet earth which are larger than the Great Barrier reef, but there is no other natural feature which is as large as this reef.

The Great Barrier Reef lies to the North of Australian continent. Actually this reef is located towards the North east of Australia. The reef is the largest natural feature on this earth. It is a very well visited place and people from all the continents visit Australia to see this reef. The reef is more than 2300 km long. It is stretching along the coast of Australia from the North of Queensland till the Bundaberg. The reef ends just before the north of this settlement. The Great Barrier Reef is also one of the World Heritage sites. This reef is a part of the world Heritage Sites because of many reasons. First of all it is a unique feature which has been there for many thousands of years. As a result it is possible for scientists to study and trace the evolutionary stages of the planet earth by studying this reef. There are many other reasons of the importance of this reef to the World Heritage Sites. The reef offers a great deal of information about the biological processes going on deep inside the sea. Also, it can be a useful tool to not the ecological processes. It is also important because it is the best example of a natural phenomenon. The reef is home to a huge range of animals.
