There is a unique feature attached to this mosque. The current mosque of Djenne is a world heritage site. It is visited by thousands of people coming from all parts of the world. But in fact this mosque is not the original Great Mosque of Djenne. The original mosque was constructed by the first Islamic ruler o this region. It was built back in the 13th century. It was an amazingly beautiful and well built mosque at that time. Koy Konboro was the first Muslim emperor of this region. When he converted to Islam, he destroyed his huge palace. In place of that palace a huge and beautiful mosque was built. This was the first mosque in this part of Africa. This mosque which was originally built by the emperor was a grand mosque and it was therefore almost 6 centuries after the emperor passed away. The old mosque became a ruin in the 19th century. There were many social and political reasons behind it. The new mosque was than built by an other Islamic fundamentalist king of this region in the 19th century. The construction was more modest this time and the mosque was even prettier a site. The construction completed in 1835. If you want to take a look at the old great mosque of Djenne, you can find a picture of it or the postcards of the ruins even today. The current great mosque was built at the place of the original great mosque back in the first decade of the 20th century. This time around the mosque has been built in a style which is traditionally and typically Sudani.

The mosque also has a few tombs related to it. The tombs of few learned Muslim scholars and religious leaders are present there. The tomb of the former Imam of the great mosque of Djenne is also there. The current great mosque is a very well built structure and is built in typical style of construction in Sudan. It has three minarets now. The mosque gathers the attention of a lot of people every year. Especially the Muslims from all parts of the world come to visit this great mosque.
