There are many canals on the surface of the earth but no other canal is as popular as the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is unique in many ways. It is not only a very brilliant piece of engineering and planning but also a beautiful site. This canal is a ship canal. Panama Canal is located in Central America. This canal goes through the Isthmus of Panama. The biggest point here which makes the Panama Canal stand out of the crowd is that it connects the world’s two biggest oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. There were many reasons behind the construction of this canal, but the most important thing was no doubt the trade and commerce prospective. Constructing Panama Canal was a huge project. It was an amazing project as far as the science of engineering is concerned. The project was completed successfully and now there is a lot more trade between the two oceans as compared to the past. This has become a blessing for many countries. This has especially affected the progress of the South American countries which were located towards the Western Coast of the South American continent. Now they have a much quicker route to reach out to the world.
Not only has this canal provided better chances of trade and commerce to the South American countries but also to the United States of America. Now the communication through sea trade between the eastern and Western coast states is much better and much quicker. Earlier, if a company from New York needed to send something to California, the route was around 14000 miles, around Cape Horn. Now the route takes only 6000 miles. This is the biggest advantage of this canal to the American region. As lots and lots of trade go on through this canal, the Central American region is also benefiting from the presence of this canal. The site where we have Panama Canal today was always considered to be the best place to construct the Panama Canal. The idea of building such a canal was there for past so many centuries. Even in the 16th century the engineers checked the possibility of constructing this canal. But the actual construction started in 1880. At that time the French were ruling the area. The construction started under their leadership. At that time the French did not succeed in their attempt. Thousands of people died while this project was on. The construction was finally successfully undertaken and completed by the United States in the 20th century. The construction in the 20th century was not easy. There were lots of land slides and few epidemics were also there. Around 5000 people died during the construction of this canal when the United States was trying to complete this project. This canal has been extremely successful after the day it stated operating. It is a master piece of engineering and is a blessing to the businesses of that area. As it a huge canal and it connects two huge water bodies, it is considered to be an amazing piece of engineering and construction science. Comments (0)
