Some places in the world are naturally beautiful. There are certain man made features and buildings which are also very attractive to look at. But most of the people are in awe of the features which have been natural and are amazingly beautiful to look at. There are many places in this world which are exceptionally beautiful and people from all parts of the world come to visit those places. The combination of a naturally beautiful place and the facilities arrangement by governments is the ideal combination. Machu Picchu literally means old peak. This peak is located in Peru and is one of the most visited places in the world. It is a well know tourist destination. People from all parts of the world visit this place.

Machu Picchu is located at a height of 7,970 feet. It is located on a mountain ridge. The ridge is located almost 44 miles North West from the city of Cusco. It is the most important remain and symbol of the Pre Columbian empire of Inca. This site is included in the Word Heritage Ste. This place was given the status of world Heritage site in the year 1983. It can be considered as a unique testimony and a beautiful piece of architecture. The place has always been a favorite of the local people. The out side word forgot it completely for few decades. It got back its international exposure and grandeur in 1911. Hiram Bingham was the person who wrote a very popular book about this place.

The building was constructed in 1450. At this time the Inca Empire was on its peak. It was amazingly successful empire at that time. This building was abandoned only 100 years later. When the Spanish people conquered the area, the building collapsed at that time. Many other Inca cities were destroyed by the Spanish when they invaded this region in the 15th century. Those people were hungry for more and more and as a result they destroyed all the symbols of Inca Empire. The remains of very few of them are still there. Machu Picchu is one of those. With the passage of time the surrounding forest grew at a very fast pace and as a result these remains were almost totally forgotten by the people. It was considered as a lost city at that time. Bingham did a lot of research on this city and revived it and brought it back to its present importance. The whole thing was dependent on his research and towards the work he did as a writer.

Most often the archeologists and the historians consider that the selection of the site of this Inca city was due to its ideal geographical location. Machu Picchu became actually popular when it was given al; due importance and attention in 1913 when National Geographic society dedicated a complete issue to this site. There are many other things and features about this site as well which make it a unique and very interesting site. This is the reason that people travel from all parts of the world to this place.
