Lincoln Memorial

Some of the places in a city most definitely act as a tourist attraction for that place. Some places are the reasons which create a heavy flow of tourist traffic towards that place. Lincoln Memorial is one such place to Washington D.C. Lincoln memorial is located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. It was built to honor the 16th president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln. It is a memorial of the president himself and it was built by Henry Bacon. Bacon was the architect who designed it and gave it the shape which is both admirable and artistic. The monument was sculpted by Daniel French. Jules Guerin was the painter and he did the interior murals of this memorial. The memorial is actually a Doric temple. It has a huge sculpture of the president. There are few inscriptions on the memorial as well. The inscriptions are from the two most famous speeches of Lincoln.

Washington D.C. is one of the world’s most well visited places. There are many other monuments in Washington D.C as well. These monuments are located near the Lincoln memorial. National World War II memorial and Korean War Veterans Memorial are to name just two of them. The administration of Lincoln Memorial is being done by National Park Service. The memorial is a very well visited place and it is open for visits any time you want to visit it. People visit it twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. It is one of the most famous memorials in Washington. Many people reach Washington D.C because of this memorial.

The plan of building this memorial was brought forward in the middle of the 19th century. An association was brought in place which was called as Lincoln Monument Association. This Association joined the United States congress in the year 1867 and the purpose of doing it was to build a memorial for the much loved and respected president of America. Although the plans started in the middle of the 19th century, the actual spot for building the memorial was not finalized before 1901. The memorial was actually authorized formally by the congress in 1911. The first stone was placed in 1914, on February 12th, which was also Lincoln’s birth date. President Harding dedicated the monument in 1922. One of Lincoln’s children was still alive at that time. Robert Todd Lincoln attended this ceremony. The monument itself is made up of marble and limestone. The marble used for building this monument was brought form Colorado. Henry Bacon, the architect was awarded a gold medal for his work in 1923.

The memorial is made up of 36 columns. At the time of the construction of this memorial, United States were 36 in number. This is an other interesting point about this memorial. The names of the 36 states at the time when Lincoln died are also there on this monument. Many people visit Washington especially for visiting this memorial. The memorial is in respect of Lincoln and is as grand as the president himself was.
