There are many extinct volcanoes in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This park makes you realize the importance of the processes of evolution and volcanic eruptions. These processes mange and run the human ecosystems. This park has a number of volcanoes, some of which are lying on the sea level while others are as high and massive as Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is the world’s most massive volcano. This volcano and others lying close to it are considered to be responsible for the making of Hawaii and other islands. The total area which is included in this park is more than 1348 square kilometers. Most part of this park is suitable for camping. Hiking is also a very favorite activity of the visitors of this park. Most of the park is still a wilderness. It is considered to be a very important place internationally and is included in the World Heritage. Many volcanoes of this park were dormant and these volcanoes can be considered responsible as the creators of black sand beaches. Few of the volcanoes are still active.

There is a very strange myth related to the soil of this region. People say that anyone who picks up the soil of this volcanic area is under a curse by Pele, the goddess of these volcanoes, until he or she returns the soil to from where it belongs. This is an ancient belief of the local people and they have lots and lots of arguments in favor of this activity. Although the local people believe this myth very strongly, but most probably this is a myth which was created by those who are on duty to protect the rocks and soil of this region. There are many people who may be responsible for creating this myth. The belief of the local people on this myth is very strong while logic says that the myth was created only to save the heritage.

There are many features in this park which attract the attention of the visitors. Volcano House Hotel and Thurston Lava Tube are two important features.
