The Great Wall of China is a huge man made feature which stands on the surface of the earth for past 2000 years. This feature is a unique and very attractive feature. One thing to be made clear about the Great Wall of China is that when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon, he was not able to see this wall as a line on the surface of the earth. But the myth says that it is visible. This wall was actually built some 2000 years back and the main purpose of building this wall was to protect the local area from the invading enemies. There was no natural protection from the enemies from this side where the wall stands today, and the only way to keep the people safe was to erect a wall. Qin Shi Huangdi was the first emperor of China who built this wall. The wall was built during the Qin dynasty. Actually before this wall was built as it stands today, it was in a different shape. The first emperor of China united the whole of China into seven states and tried to fortify the Northern side of China by connecting all four walls of protection which existed at that time. This one wall was built by extending the four already existing walls. The wall acted as a protection form the Huns, and it can also provide help in the form of signals of smoke in case there was an attack.
The Great Wall of China is one of the most important features that stand on this earth today. This wall is important not only because it has a lot of historical importance attached to it, but also because it is a unique construction as far as engineering and science of construction is concerned. The wall is a very long one, and passes through the Northern Mountains of China. This wall extends towards the North as well as towards the North West and stretches as far as Beijing. The wall is more than 4.5 meters to 9 meters thick. The total length of this wall is more than 5000 km. The height of this wall is more than 7.5 meters. The wall was constructed in different phases.
Between the years 1368-1644 the wall was extended. It was enlarged to the length of 4000 miles. It was again renovated after a period of 200 years. At that time the military requirements from the wall were different and watch towers were added to the structure of the wall. Cannons were also added to Great Wall of China during these days. The wall has a lot of importance attached to it. It is included in the Seven Wonders of the World. UNESCO included this great wall in the world heritage in 1987.
Till this day the Great Wall of China stands as the most important feature on this planet earth. There are many other wonders of architecture and engineering but the Great Wall of China is considered to be one of the best features.
