The Alhambra Palace literally means the Red palace. Alhambra is an Arabic word. In Arabic Alhambra means red. The palace is one of the most beautiful palaces of the world. The place is a remain of the 800 years rule of the Muslims in Spain. The Spanish people call it Moorish dynasty. Alhambra palace is located in Granada. Granada was the center of power as well as of education while the Muslims ruled Spain. Alhambra is located on a hilly terrace. The palace is located towards the South Eastern border of the city of Granada. The kings of Granada used to live in this palace. Alhambra palace is a unique building which shows an amazing accuracy of construction and an aesthetic sense of the engineers of this palace. It is a grand palace which is an example of beautiful and compelling Muslim architecture of that era. Charles V added a renaissance palace to the Alhambra palace later on.
Alhambra palace is located towards the South East of the city of Granada. The place stands on a plateau. This plateau is about 2430 feet in length while it is 674 feet wide. The total area of this plateau is around 142,000square meters. The palace was a very well built one and is well maintained now by the government of Spain as one of the most famous tourist attractions in Spain. The palace is an example of the advanced engineering people used to do in those days. The palace has double walls and is fortified properly. It is a beautiful palace but the point of view of security is not ignored. It is also well taken care of. The palace had 13towers in all. The river Darro flows near by. This river divided Albaicin district of Granada from the rest of it. In the same valley you will also find the Alhambra Park which adds to the attraction of Alhambra palace.
The name Alhambra palace was given to this palace because of the red color of the clay which was used to build it. The fort and the palace are made up of red clay which is a specific feature of this region. Originally the palace was with washed and was not red in appearance although it was called as Alhambra since the first day. At present there is no white wash on this fort and palace and the walls appear to be red. Now we can truly call it Alhambra, because even the walls are apparently red now. There are some references in the old books about some red castle which was not fit for surviving the army attacks and there is a narration about the fierce and bloody battle between the Muslims and the Muladies. The Muslims are said to take refuge in this castle at that time. But the Arab text shows that this castle was actually built in Nasrid dynasty. This palace is a beauty of its own kind. Not only that the palace is historically important, but it is also that the place is unique and colorful. These are the reasons that till this day Alhambra happens to be one of the most favorite tourist destination. Comments (0)
