Alcatraz

There are many places in the world which people like to visit due to the historical importance attached to those places. There are a lot of such places located in the United States of America. California is one such state which offers a lot to the visitors. You can visit a lot of tourist attractions while in California, and this is one of the reasons of development of tourism in the United States. Alcatraz Island is one such attraction for the people who visit California. This island is located in the San Francisco Bay. The location of Alcatraz Island is almost in the middle of the bay. Alcatraz Island is also called as Alcatraz or as The Rock. Alcatraz is a well know island as it has served different purposes in different periods of time. For many years it has acted as alight house to guide ships. The island also carries some military importance. One of the famous uses of this island has been as a jail. Alcatraz was considered to be one of the toughest jails in the world and the toughest of all the criminals were sent to Alcatraz. Escape from the Alcatraz jail was rare.

Due to lots and lots of historical incidents related to Alcatraz, now it has been converted into a National park and is open for public to visit it. The area is called as The National Recreation Area of Golden Gate. It is supervised by National Park service. You can reach Alcatraz Island by a ferry. The ferry can be taken from San Francisco. Fisherman Wharf is the place from where you can take this ferry to Alcatraz Island. The island is located so near the mainland but it odes not have any population of its own. The reasons are obvious. In the history this island was being used for other purposes and thus it is not inhabited as such.

The Alcatraz Island is popular because it has many unique and old features on it. It has an old prison. His prison is now abandoned. Also, the light house which is located on Alcatraz Island is the one which is the oldest one in the west of United States of America. No other light house on the western coast is as old and still operating as the light house of Alcatraz. The island itself was discovered by a European named Ayala and he named it as the island of Pelicans. Since its discovery the island was used as a light house. In the beginning of the 20th century, the light house was removed to construct the famous Alcatraz prison. Nowadays people go and visit Alcatraz Island and see the remains of that jail as well as the light house.

The island also has a military history attached to itself. The military history is basically related to the time frame of First World War. Many of the people who were kept there as prisoners called it as Devil’s Island. Many of them wrote their experiences of Alcatraz Island after the First World War ended. There was so much glamour attached to the jail in Alcatraz that many Hollywood movies have their main characters kept in Alcatraz jail.
